Basket Making Earns Women of Maliba and Kitswamba a Living

Maliba and Kitswamba sub-counties experience challenges of extreme poverty characterized by lack of hand skills, having one meal a day, and lack of basic needs for their children in homes.

In response to this situation, on 26th and 28th July 2016, RIDE AFRICA organized a skills training camp for women groups and youth who were trained in handcraft making. The participants numbering over 60 women and youth were trained in making of plastic baskets which are popularly used in the markets, both in Maliba and Kitswamba sub-counties.

Since these baskets are on a high demand, women and youth have now been given an opportunity to economically develop and turnaround their households through the incomes earned. The boasted incomes of the women and youth will ultimately enable them to provide the basic needs to their children like clothing, medical care, scholastic materials and enough food.

‘After undertaking training in basket making, I started making 12 baskets in a week and can now be able to buy scholastic materials like books, uniforms, shoes and food for my children at  Nkaiga Primary School’, Biira Mary, one of the beneficiaries of this training. This is one of the many beneficiaries of Kakindu Women Group who are turning around the fortunes of their households.
